California-based environmental services firm WISE Solutions CDI will invest around 109 billion CFA francs
Mercredi 11 Juin 2014

California-based environmental services firm WISE Solutions CDI will invest around 109 billion CFA francs ($226.35 million) under a 15-year concession to manage waste from Ivory Coast's commercial capital Abidjan, the government said.

Ivory Coast - the world's top cocoa grower and French-speaking West Africa's largest economy - is pushing for heavy investments to upgrade infrastructure left neglected during a decade-long political crisis that ended in a brief 2011 war.

In Abidjan, with its rapidly growing population of around 6 million, authorities have patched pot holes, repaired street lights and begun cleaning up the city's lagoon as they seek to improve its image and attract new foreign investment.

WISE Solutions CDI will be responsible for solid waste management, recycling and street sweeping, government spokesman Bruno Koenig said following a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

"It's a global plan to deal with all the issues of waste collection, treatment and even the education of the population," he said.

Around 36 billion CFA francs of the total investment will go towards equipment and infrastructure with the remainder representing operating costs, Kone said.
